Curriculum Ethos

Our curriculum is linked to our School Vision and values and reflects the aspirations of our school and Trust.

“Winford School - where children Flourish”

I have come that they may have life and have it to the full.

Children at Winford benefit from a rich and varied curriculum which meets the requirements of the National Curriculum.  We want the curriculum that we offer to reflect where possible our children, setting and focus on moral values which educates both heart and mind.  Although we use the National Curriculum as with all primary schools, we try to be as creative as possible to make the offer exciting, rich, relevant, worthwhile, irresistible and hopefully, FUN!

Reading is a priority throughout the school and is embedded in all areas of learning. Becoming a fluent reader is an essential life skill and opens the doors to the world of learning.

At the heart of our curriculum is the desire to engage children, develop relationships and provide children with a wide range of opportunities to learn in different ways. The curriculum is largely taught through discrete subjects like Science, History, Geography and Art for example.

The school has re-developed the curriculum recently to ensure a robust offer that has clearly defined end points that are planned carefully so that knowledge is practised, resulting in children being able to ‘ know more, remember more and do more.'

Subject Leaders and teachers have used the National Curriculum documents to develop an intent for all subjects in our curriculum and this has been taught throughout with no narrowing as we firmly believe that children must experience learning across all subjects.

The curriculum currently is planned in sequences of learning that builds on previous learning.  The curriculum is also planned to ensure all children access it as is appropriate to their needs. SEND children follow the same learning sequences as their peers when appropriate; if not, they have a carefully planned learning menu that meets their small step targets with an emphasis on increasing independence and fluency in learning.

Disadvantaged children have the same opportunities to access the curriculum as their peers – for example, trips are funded.

Our vision of being a place where children can flourish is reflected in the curriculum.  The subjects all develop children’s skills in becoming lifelong learners.

Additional academic Support for children

Many children in at some stage during their time in school will need some kind of support with the curriculum. At Winford, all lessons and curriculum activities are adapted to the needs of all pupils so that every child can access each lesson and be sufficiently challenged.

This will mean that in lessons whilst children will be working towards the same learning objectives the learning will not be exactly the same. The learning will be adapted by using different resources, groups may be guided by the teacher or working with another school adult and there may be additional challenges set for children who have achieved the expectation that are designed to deepen learning.

In addition to this adaption children will also work with other school adults in small groups to address any other learning needs. Groups may come out of class to do pre-teaching of concepts or post teaching to address any misconceptions.
